POE: Family Resources Guide
Exciting things are happening in Pend Oreille County and the Newport, WA community as we continue to build stronger connections for local families. The Family Resource Guide is developing a dedicated collaboration page where parents can easily access early childhood resources for children birth to age five.
This includes important programs such as ECEAP and Head Start, along with other local preschool and family support services available throughout Newport, WA and greater Pend Oreille County.
We are proud to collaborate with local preschools, early learning providers, and community organizations to help families discover the programs that best fit their child’s needs. Through our partnership with Pend Oreille Events, families can more easily explore available resources, compare programs, and connect with supportive services in one central place.
Our goal is to strengthen access, awareness, and connection across all early childhood programs in the region. We proudly support all preschools and family services in our community and are committed to helping every family find the right educational path for their child.

Where children and families are encouraged to play, learn, and grow.
At Pend Oreille Family Cooperative we are a nonprofit 501(c)(3) preschool proudly serving families in Old Town, Idaho; Priest River, Idaho; Newport, Washington and the greater Pend Oreille County community.
Our program is led by two dedicated teachers who provide a nurturing, play-based learning environment for young children.
We offer a drop-off preschool option for potty-trained children, as well as a unique family day cooperative program where parents and caregivers actively participate alongside their little learners. Our mission is to support early childhood development while fostering strong connections between children, families, and the community—creating a foundation for lifelong learning in a warm and supportive setting.
Born to Play. Built to Move.
Fenced In Outdoor playground
A beautiful grassy playground stretches out inside a secure, fenced space, creating a safe and welcoming place for children to explore and play. The soft green lawn is dotted with colorful outdoor toys, chalk for creative drawings, sturdy trikes for little riders, and a charming playhouse called SCARLETT’S CAFE that spark imagination.
Daily Craft and Reading Time
In a preschool classroom, craft time and reading time create a perfect balance of creativity and calm. During craft time, children eagerly gather around tables filled with paper, glue, paint, and crayons, exploring their imaginations while building fine motor skills and confidence. Laughter and conversation flow as they proudly create their own unique masterpieces. When it’s time to transition to reading, the room softens into a quiet, cozy space where children sit together to listen to stories. With wide eyes and curious minds, they follow along as teachers bring books to life, helping build language skills, focus, and a lifelong love of reading.
STEM Activities
STEM activities in a preschool introduce young children to the wonders of science, technology, engineering, and math through hands-on exploration and play. Whether they are building towers with blocks, experimenting with water and simple tools, or sorting and counting colorful objects, children learn to ask questions, solve problems, and think creatively. These activities encourage curiosity and confidence as children test ideas, make discoveries, and work together. In a fun and supportive environment, STEM learning helps lay the foundation for critical thinking and a lifelong love of learning.
❊ Testimonials
Loved by TOTS, Trusted by Parents.
Seriously! But don’t take our word for it, here are some things people have to say about us.
Our daughter has been able to come out of her shell, talk to teachers, and play with new friends. We are so grateful to the teachers and volunteers for making the co-op inviting and educational!

“
My Children were in Co-Op from 2022 to 2026, and it was one of the best decisions I have ever made for my children. My children learned so many social, fine motor, and coping skills in the loving and caring environment that Co-Op provided all those years. This place has been my home away from home for my family. I hope it will be yours too!
— Alice, Parent
“
Finding a place where my 3 year old felt comfortable was so important to me, especially since she’d never been away from me before. The first time we stepped into Co-Op, we left and she said, “Mom, this is the perfect school for me!” The teachers are so kind, engaging, and do an amazing job balancing structure and fun. I highly recommend Co-Op for anyone looking for socialization and learning for their preschooler! I also love that parents can be as involved as they want and really have a voice.

A cooperative non-profit preschool is an early childhood education program that is both parent-run and mission-driven rather than profit-focused. Families play an active role in how the preschool runs. Parents (Members) vote on a board of directors. The Board of directors oversees the operation of the school, daily activities, assisting teachers in curriculum building, and developing policies regarding budgeting and events. As a non-profit, any funds raised through tuition or fundraising go directly back into the program—supporting materials, staff, and improvements, rather than generating profit. This model creates an affordable, community-centered environment where children benefit from strong family involvement and a focus on quality learning experiences.

In short, no—but it’s important to understand that the preschool becomes what each family invests in it. Every parent has the opportunity to share their voice and advocate for what they want the program to be. While some may serve on the board or volunteer in the classroom, others can support the school in different ways. For those unable to contribute time, financial donations are always appreciated and play an important role in sustaining the program.

At our preschool, safety is a top priority, and multiple measures are in place to ensure a secure environment for every child. The facility is fully fenced and monitored, with controlled entry points to prevent unauthorized access. All toys, furniture, and equipment meet strict safety standards, and classrooms are arranged to minimize hazards. Staff are trained in first aid, CPR, and emergency procedures, and children are supervised at all times—both indoors and outdoors. Regular safety drills, clear policies for drop-off and pick-up, and ongoing cleaning and sanitation practices help maintain a healthy, safe space where children can learn, play, and explore with confidence.

At our preschool, we welcome families regardless of vaccination status, creating an inclusive environment for all children. While we encourage healthy practices we do not require vaccinations for enrollment. Families are trusted to make informed decisions for their children, and we focus on maintaining a clean, safe, and supportive setting where every child can learn, play, and grow. Open communication with parents and attentive supervision help ensure the well-being of all students while respecting individual choices. An exemption form will be available for parents to sign.

Even though we are located inside of the Newport Community Church our preschool remains a non-religious program that welcomes families from all backgrounds, beliefs, and traditions. We are committed to teaching only age-appropriate material that aligns with early childhood education standards, focusing on foundational skills such as sharing, communication, and problem-solving.

We rebranded from Newport Parent Cooperative Preschool to Pend Oreille Family Cooperative to better reflect the growth and inclusivity of our program. While our roots began in Newport, our cooperative has expanded to serve families from across Pend Oreille County, and we wanted a name that represents our broader community. The change also emphasizes that our program is centered on the whole family, not just parent participation. At the end of the 2026 school year the membership took an unanimous stance in preserving the cooperative and taking it down a new path. This new name honors where we started while embracing a more inclusive vision for the future.
